THE COAL POSITION.
FROM THE OWNERS' STAND' POINT.
FIGURES SHOWING REDUCTION,
WELLINGTON, Sept. 24,
On behalf of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners' Association, Mr W. Pryor, secretary, has forwarded the following communication to the Prime Minister furnishing details of the present position:, "I have received information as under with regard to the reduction in the output in the coal mines of the Dominion for the week ended Friday, 19th inst, in consequence of the adoption of the "go slow" policy in the mines: Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd., tons 1665; Westport Coal Co., Ltd., 1043; Westport-Stockton Coal Co., Ltd., 905; Blackball Coal Co., Ltd., 894; Hikurangi Coal Co., Ltd., 693; Northern Coal Co., Ltd., 640; Pukemiro Collieries Ltd., 433; Waipa Collieries, 350; Kaitangata Mines, 326; Paparoa Coal Mines, 320; Taratu Mines, 267; Nightcaps Coal, Ltd., 246—total, 7,792. In connection therewith it has to be noted
that the Northern Coal Company's mine at Kiripaka was closed down for the whole period, but has now resumed operations under normal conditions.
Several Green Island (Otago) mines have also produced the usual quantity of coal. In addition to the above figures the reduction of output in the State mines (estimated approximately 100 tons) must be taken into account.
The loss in production for the three weeks during which the 'go slow" system has been in operation is therefore
as under: —
For the week ended September sth, 7,170 tons.
For the week ended September 12th, 8,299. ' For the week ended September 19th, 8,792.
Total reduction in output for three weeks, 24,261.— P.A.
