SOCIABLE SPORT.
DULY APPRECIATED,
(A Maungakaramea Correspondent)
The Maungakaramea boys played their last game in the second round of th e Whangarei Rugby Union successfully against Hikurangi, on Saturday last. The game was drawn to be played in Whangarei, but the Hikurangi team kindly invited the Maungakaramea to visit their district. The invitation was accepted, and a very closely contested game was witnessed by a very large crowd of enthusiastic spectators. Although the latter half of the game was somewhat spoiled by heavy rain, from the spectators point of view it was most interesting.
After the game the boys were brought to the hotel, where a dinner was partaken of. Such a dinner as was given will long be remembered by all those who had the pleasure °f being the guests of the Hikurangi team. After dinner speeches were made by the chairman of the Hikurangi team and the president of the Maungakaramea team. Three cheers were then called for the respective teams. Cheers were also called for the proprietor of the hotel, and were heartily responded to.
Both teams then adjourned to the hall, where a smoke concert was very much appreciated. Several toasts were proposed and responded to. Songs and recitations were given by members of both teams, and a very pleasant evening was spent by all present. Cheers were again exchanged, and 11.30 saw the 'Karamea boys making for home.
Every member of the visiting team admitted that never before had they received such hospitality, and they arrived home with many good words for the Hikurangi team and public.
