INDUSTRIES COMMITTEE
REPORT.
IMPORTANT RECOMMENDAh v TIONS. ' ,
Day. The Industries Committee's report has been presented to Parliament. It finds that there is a general scarcity of labour, and 'that many industries are languishing; hence itimpresses on the public the necessity for increased production. A foremost place is given to the development of hydro-electric power, and the committee recommends the Government to push on a comprehensive scheme. The committee found a general demand for a board of industries and commerce to direct the national organisation of industries, and supports. the proposal. Othe r include increasing the number of those , engaged in agricultural and pastoral industries; stringent 'legislation against land aggregation; advances to farmers; provision of housing for employees; establishment of a dairy training scheme; encouragement of wheat and tobacco growing, also rennet making; scientific industrial research on a large scale; improvement of apprenticeship conditions; preferential rates on railways as against imported goods; development of iron deposits if possible. The committee discourages interference with wine growing, and calls for an enquiry into profiteering in woollen goods. 5 It favours Government mills and development of the fishing industry. The committee also recommends a comprehensive scheme of houseconstruction under a national department administered by a commissioner and two associates, who must be men of business. The sum of two million should be voted for the purpose. Local bodies, Including harbour boards, shoud have power/ to build in conjunction with the State scheme. The maximum advances to workers should be increased to £750.— Press Assn.
