SHEARING RECORDS.

A team of twelve shearers employed by a firm of shearing contractors on a Western Australian station has put up a good sheep record. A mob of 59,606 sheep were cut out in a total of 2291 working hours, the highest tally for one day of seven hours being 2954 sheep. The ringer a man anmed Sawallish, in this time put through 321 sheep, which equals the record of Jack Howe, who shore 321 at Alice Downs, Queensland, some years ago. This does not come up to W. Vella's record of 339 Romney Lincoln cross sheep shorn last season in the North Island. The Australian records will have been made on merino sheep.

•REGISTRATION OF STALLIONS.

Although Victoria has had a law controlling the examination and r<?gtration of stallions in operation for some years past, New South Wales has not yjjt followed suit, though the matter is again being discussed. It has been recognised for some considerable time that compulsory inspection and registration of stallions was an absolute necessity in the interests of pure horse-breeding. Up to the present some owners of stallions recognising the importance of inspection have voluntarily applied for the examination of their horses, • but others' have used their stallions irrespective of their fitness for service. The result has been the production of large numbers of low-standard of a nondescript character. A movement is now on foot to have introduced into the House a bill providing for the registration of stallions. It is stated that the clauses of the bill will provide for the elimination of voluntary action of owners. They will 'be compelled to have their stallions examined and passed for registration.
