ABNORMAL CONDITIONS.
BUTTER STOCKS VtERi LOW,
SEVERE LIMITATION.
CemSTCHUIiOH, August 26
Since Friday last the grocers in the city have limited purcibases of butter to lib per customer. This has been done in order to spread a short supply over as large a number of customers as possible. The position was brought about by a bad season in the North Island. This has practically shopped for the time being the importation of Nortlh Island butter into Canterbury.
Inquiries to-dUiy show that the position is still acute. Although stocks are low tlie grocers do not seem to think it necessary to make further limitations. The dairy companies which have limited the quantities supplied to grocersi, explain that this policy is preferable to being without butter for several weeks, which is the alternative. Grocers who ask for six boxes are given about a box and a-half. It is hoped tlhat in the first week of next month fresh make will be available, and that normal conditions will then pre vail again. It is expected that present local stocks on the limited purchases imposed on consumers wiil hold out until perhaps the middle of next month if necessary.
INVERCAItGILIi August 2G,
Butter supplies in Invercargill are practically exhausted. Many retailers declare that tiiey cannot guarantee supplies for at least a fortnight. One factory has definitely announced that it cannot supply for at least a week, and and another has a few boxes to dispose of which will no) last a week.—Press Assn.
