HIKURANGI'S HANDICAPS.

Fireman Gager outlined the history of the Hikurangi brigade, the funds originating with a bazaar which produced £130. Most of the equipment had been obtained by. voluntary effort, and the present commodious station had been erected mostly by the men, the Town Board finding the material. He urged Mr Mander to

help volunteer brigades, such as that at Hikurangi, which could not come under a fire board. The hand-reel which they had to use at Hikurangi was more fitted for draught-horse than human traction, and in other respects they wanted the facilities afforded by a board for putting their equipment on a more up-to-date basis. . THANKS., Messrs Rickard and Liversedge, on behalf of Hikurangi and Reotahi respectively, expressed warm thanks for evening's excellent entertainment. MUSICAL ITEMS. It will be seen from the foregoing that Mr A. Dobson, the musical organiser for the evening, carried out his voluntary task with the utmost credit. He also acted, with customary skill, as pianofore accompanist throughout the function.

"An unhealthy, wretched, disgusting and abominable thing,' , was how Dr. Wilkins, Medical Inspector of School-

children, speaking ac Gere, defined the use of what is sometimes euphemistically called a comforter or soother, but which in everyday talk is known as a "dummy. ,. It was, he said, one of the causes of bad teeth, ill-formed jaws, and tba growth' of

adenoids,
