EGYPTIAN SITUATION.
DECEPTIVE QUIETUDE
LONDON, May 1
The Cairo correspondent of the "Times" states that he learns from reliable sources that the appearance of restored quietude is only superficial. The provincial natives at present seem to submit, but outbreaks will recur immediately if-the troops are withdrawn. Cairo serves as the nerve centre of agitation for the clique of lawyers and students who inspire and direct the ferment over the whole country. Motor-cyc-ling agents are sent out, and a succession of troubles marks their trail everywhere. Only 15 per cent, of the native officials have resumed work in Cairo. Secret intimidation of the remainder persists, despite warnings. The Government still delays its threatened drastic action, which is obviously unavoidable. —"Times."
