The basket social in aid of the Whangarei Hospital fund realised £35 net. A cheque for that amount has been handed to Mr L. Cooper, hon. secretary and treasurer to the Auckland Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association. The Government's subsidy added to this amount brings Matapouri's contribution up to £77. Rather a tidy sum for a sparsely populated district.

Horace Clements, known to his friends as "'Holl," reported having died of wounds, saw some 3 J years of active service in France. Wounded on two previous occasions he was invalided to England. After a time he again joined the firing line, and met with the wounds which caused his death. He was a big-hearted man, generous to a fault. His duty done, he has gone the way of all flesh He will be remembered as a soldier who crossed swords with the abominable Hun from the very first days of the war, and who did his best to get others to follow him. The sympathy of the settlers are with his people.
