Punctually at noon General Alienby arrived on horseback outside the Jaffa Gate, the main western entrance to Jerusalem. Everybody who could walk, and even some who had to be. carried, thronged the route of progress, and as he passed they clapped their hands enthusiastically. General Allenby acknowledged the demonstration graciously, and at some distance from the gate_alighted and walked forward on foot towards the city, where the temporary Governor was waiting to receive him. A procession was then formed, General Allenby being escorted on cither hand by the colonels commanding the French and Italian contingents, and followed by Italian, French, and American military attaches.
