WELLINGTON, July 21.

The High Commissioner reports> under date, London, 20th July, 3.50 p.m.:—iA. French, official report says: %"In the region of Hurtebise-Craonne very violent fighting took place yesterday evening. A powerful concentration of enemy artillery preceded the main assault with important forces on our plateaux before Cra-onn-e and Vauclerc. " Fighting hand-to-hand our men. defended magnificently. The enemy was unable to set foot in our positions, which we maintained intact despite heavy enemy sacrifices. The ground between the lines was covered with dead, testifying to the bloody defeat of the enemy. ■Between the plateaux of Californie and Casemates the enemy attacks were equally unsuccessful."
