TOWN BOARD MEETING,

A general meeting of the Hikurangi Town Board was held on Tuesday evening; present—Comrs. T. R. Gager (chairman), A. M. Rust, T. Shore and E. Swarm. Street and Bridge Loan.—The State Advances office wrote forwarding £1000, being balance , of loan raised for street and bridge works. Boundary Fence.—The Hikurangi Dairy Company notified the Board that the erection of a boundary fence between the Board's and Company's property will be put in hand at once. The Alien Question. —On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Comr. Shore, it was resolved to support the petition to be presented to Parliament which, was promoted by Kaikohe residents in regard to the alien question of the North, with the exception of the last clause of the petition referring to the moral conditions of aliens which the Board is not in a position .to-sup-port.

Hotel Licenses.— The Bay of Islands Licensing Committee reported that a publican's license had been granted for the Hikurangi Hotel in place of the usual accommodation license. Burial of Soldiers.—The Minister for Internal Affairs wrote asking the Board to grant free burial plots for returned soldiers who might die prior to their discharge from the Expeditionary Force and also if the Board would later on permit the erection of suitable headstones or memorials by the Government m connection with soldiers who have given their lives for King and coun-try-—lt was resolved to grant the application. Building Permits.—lt was resolved to approve of the removal of a building from Park street to bowling green Grounds subject to a brick chimney being provided. It was also agreed to grant Mr McTntyre permission to erect a shelter shed in connection with his dairy. Fire Brigade Captain.—The secretary of the Hikurangi volunteer fire brigade reported that Mr K. Riekards had been elected captain of the Brigade for the ensuing year. It was resolved to authorise the Brigade to purchase two text books dealing with the question of extinguishing fires. Metal. —An offer to supply extra crushed metal at 6s 6d per yard was accepted. The engineer stated that there was some difficulty in rolling the outer edges of the newly metalled streets owing to the steam roller getting out of control when working near the water tables. Street Kerbing.—The question of carrying out street kerbing and crossings from the railway gate to King street bridge was held over until the next meeting of the Board. The surfaceman reported that the contractors had supplied (542 cubic yards of crushed metal and 47 yards of rough block during the month. j

Pound-keeper.—lt was resolved to appoint Mr J. Mclntyre as public pound-keeper.

Noxious Weeds Act.—Tt was resolved to ask the Government U> instruct their Noxious Weeds Inspector to carry out the provisions of the Noxious Weeds Act with respect to removal of gorse and blackberries from roads within the town district.

Night Soil Depot.—The chairman reported lie had not yet been able to secure a suitable site for a nig" ht soil depot. Tie was instructed to make further enquiries in the matter and report to the next meeting or' the Board.
