GREECE AND GERMANY.

AMBASSADORS RECALLED. LENS ASSAULT. TERRITORY GAINED. FOUR MILES BY ONE. RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE READY RIGA TO BLACK SEA. FRENCH CRUISER SUNK.

It is anticipated in reliable circles that a Russian offensire from Riga to the Black Sea is imminent, and that it will exceed in comprehensiveness the.1916 campaign which was directed by General Brusiloff. An optimistic note concerning the duration of the war is sounded by Mr Will Thorne, who predicts a collapse of hostilities before next Christmas if the Germans ane compelled by the Russian offensire to weaken the Western defensive forces. It is anticipated that Germany will declare war against Greece at an early date, the Government of the latter country having signified hostility by recalling the Greek Ministers from Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, and Turkey. .. Sui»orb fighting recently undertaken by the British in thr Lens ~ area has resulted so far in the taking of an area measuring four mUes by one and containing positions which powerfully command Lens. The operations have been brought to this satisfactory issue with comparalively small losses to the British forces, while the enemy has suffered very severely. Following quickly on the news that Greece has dissociated herself, from the supporters of Germany, comes the expected sequel that rela. tions with the Central Powers have been sundered. Coupled with the ririd "policing" of Greece by French troops, this entirely frees tfte [Allied army at Salonika from the danger of being attacked in the rear, and may mean an early offensive on a largte scale in the Balkans, possibly with Greek troops assisting.
