SOME SOUTHERN CRITICISM.

'' INSIGNIFICANT REDUCTION.''

CHEISTCHURCH, June 28,

Some interesting interviews were recently obtained on the subject of reduction in the number of race days. "As far as my judgment goes," said Mr L. M. Isitt, "I am not at all surprised at the arrangement that has been come to. So soon as I learned that the Government was conferring with racing men with the intention of acting upon their advice, I knew that any reduction arrived at would be insignificant. There has been no real attempt on the part of the Government to handle the matter in the real interests of the country and its efficiency. They do not seem to have considered what would minister to efficiency. In some of the other colonies, racing commences at 1.30 p.m. Here it commences at 11.30 a.m., forthe one and sole purpose of running in eight races instead of six a day, and so giving a bigger opportunity for the machines to plunder the people.. If members of the Cabinet had taken the trouble to consult a number of the heads of our big manufacturing concerns, freezing companies, boot manufacturers and ironfounders, they would have discovered that one of their chief complaints is that practically the whole morning is wasted, under the 11.30 o'clock arrangement, the men are so mad to get away.
