Letters were received last mail from Private H. Spratt, from hospital in Knglaml. Private Spratt, who joined he Ist Australians on the outbreak of ■ar and saw service in Egypt, GalHpoli, ■Mid France, has been wounded three times in the course of the campaign. Nevertheless, he reports himself as practically convalescent from his third ■md latest "casualty' 'and expects to •>o fit and on his feet again shortly. He describes the hospital he is in as very -onifortable. "It's a very old place," 'ie says, "and belongs to one of the 'nobs.' " —A workman named Peterson, employed at the Dominion Cement Co. 's ; .vorks, was the victim of a nastly accident on Sunday last. It appears that the man, who was working on the top of one of the rotaries, slipped and fell to the concrete floor below, a distance of 20 feet. He was transported to Onerahi House, where he resides, and on medical assistance-being obtained, it was found that although no bones were broken there was considerable muscular contusion accompanied by general jar and shock which will keep fhe sufferer incapacitated from work for some days. is reported that the scow "Bravo" 'ias been purchased by the Dominion Portland Cement Co. and will be pvr on the running' as tender for the con•vvance of lime-stone rock and coal, '■.o and from Onerahi wharf to the Porfc'and works. The annual examination* at t'.ie Onerahi School were completed last week when Inspector Priestley reported ."ery favourably on the general progress of the pupils, at the same time ■omplinienting the headmaster and his assistant teacher on the excellent results obtained. Two candidates, Miss M Wilson and Master F. Stiever, presented themselves for examination under Standard VI and both came through the test successfully. Mr F. Stiever has been appointed to the staff of the local post office, vice Mr Eizzard, who is taking a position in the chemical department of the Dominion Cenioni Co . at Portland The local Boy Scouts, under the leadership of Scoutmaster Edwards, •onducted manoeuvres on Monday night, under war conditions. The scout '■■ent was set up in proximity to the ■■tream in Park road and the tactics adopted consisted of a night u'.tack ">i: he camp by one patrol, vlr'st the second acted as defenders.
