WHANGAREI HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

The adjourned ordinary monthly meeting of the Whangarei High School Board of Governors was held on Friday, December S; present: Messrs J. M. Ivilion (chairman), W. A. Carruth, R. Thompson, R. C. M. Harington. J. D. McKenzie and E. O. Weaver. Harbour Reclamation Works. —A notification was received from the Whangarei If arbour Board' stating it was proposed to reclaim lands at Limeburners' creek. House Improvements.—-Mr Candy, one of the Board's tenants, wrote stating he had enlarged the house he occupied on the Board's property held under lease at Kioreroa. Ho asked to be supplied with sutlicient timber for the construction of a verandah and if granted he would carry out the work of its erection at his own cost. He also asked the Board to paint the building.—On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr' Carruth, it was resolved that Messrs'McKenzie, Harington and Weaver be appointed a com mittee. with power to act after conferring with Mr Candy on the matters referred to in his application. Kerr's Scholarship —The Public Trust Oflice advised the Board that a bonus of ,'JI 7s hud been added to the j funds of the Kerr scholarship for the current year. !L was resolved in the event of M' ; ss McKinlay, who had met with an accident, being unable to con'.inue to take advantage of the Kerr scholarship, to offer it again for public competition, tho examination to take place on the assembly day of the opening of the .-vhool for the lirst term of 1917. Proposed Alteration in Dates of Examination. —The .Napier High School Hoard of Governors wrote asking the Board's opinion with regard to holding the various public examinations during Dceiuber instead of November in each year, in order that the examination may lie concluded by the end of the school year. The letter also pointed out that if the summer vacation were extended to the middle oi February pupils would escape a portion of the hot Weather, which would be to their advantage both as regards ' health and study. : —After discussion i! j was decided to inform the Napier High 1 School Board that it had the sympathy 3 of the Governors on the matter but before expressing its views more fully the Board would 'await the finding of "the secondary schools conference on the matter. The teaching staff salaries for the in coming year were adjusted, each receiving a small advance. It was also 3 agreed to grant £10 for the boys athetotic games committee, and also a sum not exceeding £lo for the girls : tennis courts and requisites. Authority was also given for procuring agricul--7 tural science apparatus for the agricul--3 tural class room. Accounts amounting to £2.35 12s 4(1 ? were passed for payment. Prize Giving Day.—lt was resolved 3 that the school close for the current 3 year on the I.3th December and that j the annual school prizes be distribute' ' on tho same date, when the opportunity 3 would be taken to unfurl the school ' flag. Election of Chairman —The secretary presided during the election of the chairman for the ensuing year.—On the motion of .Messrs Thompson and Harington, Mr Killen was re-elected to the oflice. The chairman-elect returned thanks for -the Board's renewed confidence in him and promised to do all . he could to advance the interests of the i school.
