LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Tokerau District Maori Land Board is holding a sitting at the Whangarei CourChonse to-day to consider-, the sale of nine blocks of land to local Europeans. -".Mr G. 11. Woods is presiding. The total area approximates 4000 acres. This morning the Tokerau Maori Land Board,- sitting in the Whangarei * Court-house, deferred the commence- J tnent of its proceedings pending the hearing of the Thorburn-MeKinley assault case, and a number of natives were consequently in the body of the court awaiting the turn of the board. When Mr C. H. Chissell, J.P., stated the amount of William Thorburn's bail at £200, a Maori at the back of the court expressed his voluntary view in the words: "By gorry You make him pretty hot!" The ejaculator was promptly ejected from the court. At the Supreme Court in Auckland on Saturday last, an appeal came before Mr Justice Hosking onder -a by-law of the Kawakawa Town Board. John Benjamin Clark, a licensed auctioneer, had been fined £:! .'is by Mr K. W. Burton, S.M., on the admitted fact that he hail hired a room for one day and held therein an auction sale of miscellaneous goods without inlying a license fee. The by-law under which he was convicted provided that- no person (oilier than the owner thereof) making use of any house, shop, or tenement, with the town district for the purpose of offering any wares, merchandise, or refreshments for sale should pay a license fee of £.'! os. such fee to be refunded if the licensee continued in the premises for a period of six months. Mr R. A. Singer, for the appellant, quoted a number of authorities to show that the by-law was ultra vires, unreasonable, and in restraint of trade. Mr J. J. Butler, for the respondent, explained that the object of the by-law was to prevent natives from being lured into oxtravagenco at certain times of the year by itinerant auctioneers and traders, who did not contribute to the charitable' aid' which was required by many native families as an aftermath of the extravagance referred to . His Honour reserved"his decision^ •. There ar P , thousands °J housewives .singing the praise ...of.. "Xo. Rubbing 'Laundry Help" because it has proved a labour saver, clothes saver, and hands-saver,-seven weekly washings cost .11— H. Wood. .
