• The "Nord Sud" agency states that the defence of Wallachia, from the outset, was deemed to be of secondary importance, while that of Moldavia was regarded as absolutely essential. The Germans did not succeed in piercing the Moldavian front despite repeated efforts. The occupation of the agricultural districts in Wallachia affords the Germans a hope of struggling for some time longer with the famine, whose spectre is driving Germans to a desire for immediate peace. The German command in order to obtain that brief respite, has concentrated its forces on the Balkan front to the detriment of other European fronts, thus sacrificing strategic considerations to the necessity of re-victualling.
