BRITANNIA.
It would not b e entirely correct to say that the programme at the Britannia on Saturday night was exceptionally fine. It was undoubtedly "fine" and a great popular attraction, as the large gathering of people testified, but the usual programmes of. this cosy and wellventilated theatre are now so thoroughly good every night that the word "exceptional" would be unfair. Films that aroused enthusiastic applause were the "X-rays on the Battlefield," "Overcoats," a capital comedy turning upon an exchange of photos; and "After Dark," a three-star drama, in which the magnificently staged scenes pass from a charming home to th e battlefield, and then to the city with its vivid night contrasts of society and Blum life. The orchestral music v.-v.f, a very pleasing feature of the evening, achieving a high standard of excellence. The orchestra included Madame Corbett, piano, Messrs A. Leatherby, cornet, Arthur Leatherby, trombone, P. VVhitelock (conductor) violin, and C. S. Over, Xylophone, bells, and drums. Most of the performers were also soloists of known ability, and there were passages where one or another of the instruments stood out with a distinct effect, awakening a hope on the part of the audience that a solo might be included in the musical programme; especially during the extra interval when the gas engine failed for a few minutes. The proprietors are installing a new gas engine of much larger power, which has been on order some weeks. The brief darkness and the delay due to the failure of the electric current were taken in cheerful good humour by the audience. The programme of Saturday's pictures will be given again this evening.
