PROBATION GRAN TEH. ; (Press Association.) j WELLINGTON. May 11. j A young mau named Stephen CunK i who had pleaded guilty to several j charges of embezzlement, came up lor I sentence to-day. C-ounsel explained that. accused's lapse was due to unfortunate sps-cula-tions. When the war started he iaimediately volunteered and went to Egypt, earning the good opinion of his officers, who were willing to take him back. Restitution of the amount would be made, and counsel asked that Curtis be allowed to return to the war. The Chief Justice said that if the: Defence Department would take accused back he would grant probation.
