CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

QUARTERLY MEETINGS DECIDED UPON. V

At the annual meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce held last night Mr J. E. Holmes moved that in future quarterly meetings shall be held instead of monthly meetings, as in th e past. He said that the monthly meetings were poorly attended, an*d it was left to half a dozen members to carry on the work. Some had been ungrateful enough to belittle their work. The Chamber had done a lot of good work for the district, even, perhaps, if some of the work had been easy for the reason that the Chamber was not troubled with the financial aspect like other local bodies. Ther e was a possibility of a better attendance at quarterly meetings The" committee could deal with any business which arose in the interim. In supporting the motion Mr A. L. Hempton said that when the Chamber was formed there were a great many pressing matters in the interests of the district, but many of them had been dealt with. He pointed out that the Hamilton and New Plymouth chambers had quarterly meetings only. The president (Mr H. C. Rishworth) mentioned that on a former occasion a proposal to hold quarterly meetings had been defeated by 7 votes to 5. „ , Slight opposition was shown to the proposal by Mr Eecles, until it was pointed out that provision was made for the holding of a special meeting at any time, or the monthly meetings could be reverted to if found necessary. The motion was carried unanimously.
