PSYCHE'S NEW CAPTAIN,

AN INTERESTING CAREER,

Captain Herbert John Temple Marshall, who has taken charge of H.M.S. Psyche as senior naval officer of the New Zealand division of the Eastern fleet, is th e eldest son of Mr. H. ■■J.Marshall, late E.N., of Gayton Hall, .Ross-on-Wye, and was born in May, 1870. 'As a midshipman he"served in the Audacious, flagship of Sir R. Vesey Hamilton, and of Sir Nowell Salmon, on the China station, November, 1885, and the Iron Duke, in the Channel squadron, December, 1888. As aeting-sub-lieutenant he was sent to the Mersey for the naval manoeuvres in JulyAugust, 1890, and on being confirmed in that rank was appointed to the Wallaroo, for passage to Australia, March, 1891, and-on promotion to lieutenant was transferred to the Ringdove, oh the same station, June 30, 1892. On his return to England two years later he was appointed to the Australia, coastguard ship at Southampton, and was lent to the Naiad for the manoeuvres of July, 1894. From November, 1894, to May, 1898, he served in the Brisk, on the East Indian station, and commanded the destroyer. Ferrett, at Devonport, from v September, 1898, to October, 1899. He was employed at the Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport, from November, 1899, to April, 1900, when' he was appointed first-lieutenant and for (G.) duties, of the Ringarooma, on the Australian Station. He was first in the. Diadem, on special service, from December, 1903, to April, 1904, and was advanced to: Commander on June 30. of the latter year. s He was commander of the Hermes, in the Atlantic fleet, October, i9o4j of the Royal Oak, in reserve at Chatham, March, 1905; and of the Ocean, at the same port and in the Channel fleet, August, 1905. After a war course he went to Denmark in August, 1908, to study the language of that country on full pay, and ,on returning to England at the beginning of the following year; f was selected for temporary service in the Naval Intelligence Department. He passed as an interpreter in Danish shortly afterwards, arid commanded th e Proserpine, oh the East Indies station, from July, 1909, to the beginning of •August, 1911.

Be was promoted to captain in June, 1911, for successful operations against gun-runners in the Persion Gulf. In the spring of 1912 he took a war course and has since commanded the Swiftsure, for the voyage to the East Indies, March, 1913; the Highflyer, for the voyage home, April, 1913; and the Cressy, for charge of a group of ships of the Third fleet at the Nore, May, 1913.
