A.J.C. SPRING MEETING.

SOLTANO BADLY BEATEN

(By Telegranh-Press Assn.-Copyright)

SYDNEY, Oct. 4

The spring meeting of the A.J.C. opened at Randwick to-day. The weather kept fine, though there was a thunderstorm after the last race. Lord and Lady Denman were present. The attendance numbered 60,000. Emperador ran prominent throughout the Spring Stakes. Soltano gave a very disappointing display in the Derby. Apparently I something happened to him, as after going aoout a mile he fell back from second place to last. Beragoon, who won under pressure, proved himself a game colt. Beau Soult failed to stay the journey. The owner has scratched Beragoon for the Metropolitan owing to the severe race the colt had in the Derby. Cadonia has been scratched for the Metropolitan because Abbeite, the other "leg" in the double failed in the Epsom. Cadonia will not be started in another handicap until the Melbourne Cup. Aieconner was a real surprise packet in the Epsom owing to the poor track form lately shown. The public showed its resentment at the late scratching of Duke Foote for the Metropolitan by loud hooting before and after the Spring Stakes. It was the worst demonstration seen at Randwick under similar circumstances. Hurdles. —Wimmera 1, Status Quo 2, Red Corn 3. Nineteen started including The Native, Beacon, Whakaweira, Loch Maben.
