TREATY OBLIGATIONS.
FOREIGNERS AND GUM LANDS,
Interesting matter concerning treaty obligations was mentioned in the Land Bill debate last night. "We cannot help ourselves," was the Prime Minister's explanation of the clau33 in the Government's Land Bill which repeals a former enactment excluding foreigners from ownership of northern gum lands. The attention of the Imperial Government had, he continued, been called to this section, and they had pointed out to the New Zealand Government that this was in cantraventiori of certain treaties made by the Imperial authorities. The law was to be amended to allow Austrians and Italians to become owners of land.
"And Chinamen?" asked an Oppositionist.
Mr Massey replied that he thought not.
