MANCHESTER TRADES UNION

CONGRESS

LONDON, Sept. 6

At the Trades Union Congress, sitting at Manchester, a resolution was carried urging a widespread movement to enforce the limitation of public purchases to goods made by unionist labour; also that the Government be urged to legislate for the payment of workers on all statutory holidays.

A resolution to nationalise the mines and railways was carried by 1,944,000 against 4&000.

A resolution was adopted in favour of the extension of the franchise to all adults.

The Congress also passed resolutions protesting against unnecessary armaments and urging the appointment of a Royal Commission on the subject.

It was also resolved to do the utmost to make war impossible by instructing the Parliamentary Committee to, confer with the Miners, Transporters and Railwaymen's Federations with a view to negotiating with ■ foreign trades unions for the purpose of securing joint action in the.event of war being imposed on them. It was resolved to urge that the Insurance Act be directed by one body of commissioners for the who<le kingdom, and that steps be taken to give approved societies more control.
