A PREACHER CALLED TO DIPLOMATIC OFFICE.
The President of the United States is making obvious endeavours to fill diplomatic international posts with men of religious instincts. His offer to Dv. John R. Mott, although not accepted, showed his earnestness in a desire to honour and a readiness to trust a man of outstanding Christian statesmanship. The news of the most recent appointment of the kind still further emphasises the President's determination in these matters. Dr. Henry van Dyke, the Presbyterian tpreacher and writer, has been appointed United States Minister to the Netherlands. President Woodrow Wilson, by persuading Dr. van Dyke to accept, has secured as American representative at that important post one whose personal graces, as well as liis achievements in the field of literature and his contributions to theology and the progress of organised religion, should make him persona grata in any land.
