HIKURANGI TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Hikurangi Town Board was held last night, when there were present: Commissioners T. R. Gager (chairrrfan),R. Howie, C. B. Kerr and F. S. Millington. BOUNDARIES. The clerk was authorised to confer with the county engineer and ascertain the cost of ferro concrete boundary pegs to be placed at the boundary of the town district and county. ROAD METAL. As a result of the road inspector's report it was agreed that the members of the board inspect the various quarries in the district and report on the suitability of the metal for road repairing. WATER WORKS. The Public Trust Office forwarded £7000 in debentures for the water works loan. The chairman and town clerk were authorised to sign the debentures on behalf of the board. RECREATION GROUND. Messrs Dunn and Tattley waited on the board urging that additional land be acquired from Mr W. Carter in order to increase the area of the recreation grounds. Mr Tattley stau-d that the pubilc subscriptions collected amounted to £80. This money was to be devoted to improving the grounds. It was resolved to give effect to the deputation's request.

THANKS. On the motion of Corns. Howie and Millington it was resolved to thank Mr H. Weaver for donation of shelter trees to be planted about the boundaries of the recreation grounds. REPAIRS. It was resolved that eight loads of scoria be procured for repairing footpaths in Whalley Road and George Street. PUBLIC HEALTH. Dr Fra/.er Hurst waited on the Board and pointed out the necessity of confining natives to their settlements and not allowing them in the the township, He asked the board to co-operate with the Health Department by reporting any cases ■where there were destitute .Maoris confined to their settlement.

The Board thanked DrFrazer-Hurst and informed him that very few Maoris visited Hikurangi, and that the residents were not alarmed at the outbreak of the epidemic as far as Hikurangi was concerned.

Mr Shenton, Government Health Inspector also approached the board and pointed out the necessity of adopting stringent measures with regard to the removal of house and yard rubbish. He stated that urgent attention to such matters was in the best interests of all. He promised to pay frequent visits to the town with the object of improving sanitation. He also referred to the question of a drainage scheme with which the board- would be, faced in the near future. *Mr Shenton was thanked for his advice and assistance to the board. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £34 12s 3d were passed for payment.
