THE WAIPU JUBILEE.

CO M M BMORATION MONUMEN T,

SYMBOLICAL DESIGN SELECTED.

AUCKLAND, Sept. 3

The ' committee appointed in connection with the jubilee of the settlement at Waipu,, \Vhich is to be commemorated by erecting a monument in the township, has just selected a design sent in by W. Parkinson and Co.,'of Auckland. The design is a striking one, and fittingly symbolises the event and the origin of the sturdy Scotch settlement. The monument will be :'.O feet high, standing on two concrete steps, the base measurement being 12 feet square. Above this there will be a; red granite plinth, upon which the larger base will stand. This larger base will be six sided, to represent the six ships" in which the Waipu pioneers came down from Nova Scotia, and the Margaret the h'rsr to arrive, will be allotted the place of honour. The faces will be carved with representations of the ships and the story of the origin of the settlement will 'also be set out. This hexagon will be surmounted by a bound cluster of pillars, signifying brotherhood bound together in unity. The thisrle, maple and fern—the emblems of Scotland, the original home of the settlers, Nova Scotia, where they sojourned for a while, and New Zealand—will be entwined, and/ surrounding the whole will be the lion rampant from the Arms of, Scotland, carved in granite. This imposing monument will stand in the Educe tion Reserve on a site specially set apart for it.
