A NEW GUINEA MURDER

EXPLORER DONE TO DEATH. MUTILATED, SPEARED AND BURNT. (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright); BRISBANE, Sept. 2. On the 29th August a wireless message from Port Moresby (Papua) reported that a German named Warner had been murdered by natives and that a party had gone out to investigate. Details of the murder have now come to hand. Warner was a German of American descent and a prominent mineralogist. He left Sydney in July accompanied by a young man named Windsor, intending to prospect for radium in the interior of Papua.

After spending a week with a missionary at. Menapi, he departed, accompanied by three native carriers. At the end of a couple of days Windsor became ill and with one of the carriers returned to the Mission station. '

Warner pushed forward towards unexplored country where he found the natives hostile. He was attacked and defended himself till his revolver became jammed.

The natives, using slings, broke Warner's arms and then killed him with spears. They cut off his arms as trophies and burned the body, dancing round the fire. The two carriers escaped. The missionary visited the scene and found the charred remains of Warner. A punitive expedition has been, despatched.
