GAMBLING ON ATLANTIC LINER.
NEW YORK, Aug. 2S. The smoking-room of the Cunard liner Mauretania was the scene, of continuous gambling during the last voyage from England. The games played were baccarat and banker. Men who played declared that as much as C 100,000 changed hands on the trip. Jay O'Brien, of New York, won more than £5,000 on several occasions. Once he pocketed £1,000 on the turn up of a single card, and on the last night the ship was at sea he gathered in £2,000 in twenty minutes. A discreditable incident was provided by the conduct of some of the women on board, many of whom, in violation of the Cunard Company's rules, pushed their way into the smoking-room and participated in the games.
