SALVAGING THE DEVON'S CARGO

FIVE SHILLINGS AN HOUR DEMANDED. WELLIN-GON, Aug. 31. A number of wharf labourers engaged for salvage work on the Devon declined to begin operations unless ftJhe shipping companies paid thelm, 5/ an hour and overtime, their contention being that it 'as special work and outside the limits of the harbour. The company offered 2/ an hour for day work and 3/ for overtime, and special consideration in case of wet cargo, but this was not considered enough, and the salvaging is now being carried- on by the New Zealand Shipping Company's, stevedores. The weather is fine and the sea has moderated considerably.
