A curious effect of the plentiful supply of tomatoes in the Wanganui district, according to a gentleman who was recently there, has been the loss of trade felt by the butchers. It is said that where twenty carcasses are sold in the winter only five are sold now. The weather is warm, and people prefer s vegetarian diet, which ii in cheap and abundant supply. Giving evidence before the Imperial Trade Commission at Auckland, Mr. Hamer, engineer to the Harbour Board, said it was almost impossible to forecast the direction of modern marine development. He mentioned that a new steamer was building by tlie Hamburg-American line of over 900 ft in length. Sir William White, the president of the Institute of Civil Engineers, had set down 40ft as the maximum depth of water required for berthing. They could not hope to get that depth at Auckland for some little time. The Port of London 'did not have it.
