DEATH OF CANON JULIAN.
AUTHOR OF THE "DICTIONARY OF HYMNOLOGY."
Canon John Julian. D.D., L.L.D., who recently passed away in his seventyfourth year, was the acknowledged hymnologist in this country isays the "Westminster Gazette"). His "Dictionary of Hymnology," which was first issued in 1892, and appeared in a revised form with additional matter five years later, is the standard book upon the subject. It represents great labor, as well as catholicity of inclusion, and will remain for a ions time the basis for all future reseai-eh in the field of hymnology. In preparing the dictionary Dr Julian made a large collection of books and MSS, and these he presented to the library at the Church House, Westminster, which in itself constitute an important, hymnological department. Whilst the dictionary was Dr Julian's greatest work, he wrote many other books concerning hymns, his earliest having been published in 1874. One of his last was his monograph on "Nearer, My God to Thee, - ' containing some valuable notes on that famous hymn. Dr Julian, who held the Canonry of Fenton in Minster since 1001, was given an honorary MA. degree by Durham University in 1887. Archbishop Benson bestowed the Jjambeth D.D. degree in 1894. and the same year the Harvard L.L.Ij. In each case the honor came as a tribute to his special field of work. A few days before his death Canon Julian resigned his living at Topclinx-. which he had held since 1905, and vc. the regret of his parishioners was unable to attend the meeting arranged to present him with a testimonial in recognition of his services in the Yorkshire parish.
