HOUSES DEMOLISHED BY
HUNDREDS.
MOSQUES BURNED DOWN.
(Received June 5, 8.32 a.m.) CONSTANTINOPLE, June 4. A great fire destroyed hundreds of houses, over an! area of three-quarters of a mile, and demolished several mosques and annexes of mosques.. The Sultan Ahmed mosque itself escaped, except the minaret. Great'distress is probable. One thousand houses, four mosques, and ten schools were destroyed by the fire. '
Fifteen thousand people are without shelter, while several have perished.
The outbreak originated in a new building over which there was a dispute between the owner and builder; It is supposed that the later fired the building out of revenge.
