INFANTILE PARALYSIS FROM SANDFLY BITE.
KANSAS UNIVERSITY MAN'S SUR-
PRISING DISCOVERY.
A new cause of infantile paralysis has been discovered in the hospital ot the University of Kansas, in Rosedale. A monkey which had beer, subjected to bites of the Kansas sandfly for experimental purposes has been found to have that disease.
The experiment was conducted at Lawrence, to discover if the sandfly might be the cause of the spread of pellagra. When the animal became ill it was sent to the Rosedale Hospital, that the case might be compared with that of Frank Tibernik, known to be suffering from pellagra.
The appeai-ance of infantile- paralysis upsets all expectations of the .
physicians
Tipernik, the pellagra patient, lies at all times in a stupor. Occasionally he breaks into a "singsong" con-
versation with imaginary persons. Physicians at the hospital say he has reached the final stages of the mysterious disease, but may live months.
