TRAGEDY IN A TAXI-CAB.

Passers-by on a road on the extreme outskirts of Oerlin were on the morning of December 20 witnesses of a fearful tragedy. Their attention was attracted by a white public iretor-ear, driving at full speed. As it approached the door was flung violently epm, and a woman, who at the same time uttered piercing screams for help, was violently thrust out. For a few seconds she retained her footing on the step, and clung desperately to the side of the vehicle, but a blow in the face fvwm a man's fist dislodged her, and she fell on to the roadway. The car tiueeded onwards and was soon out of sight.. When the witnesses of this tragic drama reached the spot where the woman was lying she still showed some faint signs of life, but she expired a moment or two later. Her neck had been broken by the fall, and on various parts of ncr body were five wounds which at first were believed to be stabs, but turned out on closer examination to be bullet holes.

Somewhat later a mysteriout motor-

car was driven up ,to a neighboring police station. It contained a man in a state of unconsciousness, bleeding from a bullst wound in the temple. The driver, according to one account, said that he hud not become aware that anything was amiss until he happened to look back, and saw his male passenger lying alone on the floor of the vehicle.

Police investigations hav-e shown that the wounded man was a clerk, ar,d his companion a domestic servant. Tney had bee.a engaged to be married, but latterly the woman had shown prefei-ence for another suitor. Jt is conjectured that her finance, who is liot expected to recover, became crazy with jealousy and inveigle"! bc?r into the motor, with the intention uf killing her and then committ : u ( ? suicide.
