Mrs Marchmont was granted £1 a year increase for cleaning the additional class-rooms at the school. OVERCROWDED. Further important evidence of the increase of population in Whangarei was placed before the Board, and the sudden influx of freeplace pupils gave the members something serious to think about in respect of providing accommodation. The chairman said that 125 pupils attended the school yesterday, and he thought this large number was very "gratifying. He called upon the school principal, Mr Lupton, to enlighten the members further.

Mr Lupton said that the increase far exceeded expectations. There would be 127 pupils, of whom about 117 were free-place, on the roll, and the enlargements now under construeprove inadequate to cope wit_ the influx. He suggested, that the work to the proposed cloak-room be postponed, and an opportunity be alk>wed to convert this apartment into a class-room. It was absolutely impossible to teach 127 scholars in the four class-room 1 -' at present at the disposal of the teachers. With the larger number of children, and with six class-rooms, Mr Lupton said that another teacner was necessary. He applied for a junior male assistant.

In discussing the position Mr Thompson said that the Government, which under the Education Act provided free places, should be informed of the conjested conditions at the * school, and that further assistance to eiect an additional class-room be applied for.

Mr Carruth moved: "That the (Architects be asked to confer with the builder, with the object of deferring the work in the cloak-room, and to estimate the, work required there separately from the main contract." The motion was carried. EURTHER ASSISTANCE REQUIRED.
