The Hongkong disaster appears to have been on an immense scale; and the loss of life is believed to be- far in excess of the earlier estimates. v V Reuter's correspondent at Manila states that it is reported that one thousand lives have been lost. The British torpedo-boat destroyer Taku, and two British river boats were damaged. < " Twelve ships were sunk, ; 24 were driven ashore, ai^nd seven were damaged, including the Polynesien , "-\ the Strathmore, and the Radnorshire. Half of the native craft have/been sunk. It is officially stated by the Admiralty that it was the Algerine, and not the Phoenix, that was dami^d.Received September..2lj : ff.iOra.m. London, September; 20.
