Capt Edwin states that there are now strong evidences of the approach of a period of hard westerly gales. Large number of tourists, amongst whom are several Broken Hill celebrities, are at present at Rotorua and intend spending a mouth in the Hot Lakes district. In Sydney military circles it is rumored that Rear- Admiral Scott would be not unwilling to remove the headquarters of the Australian squadron from Sydney to Now Zealand, and further, that this desiro is not altogether unconnected with tho recent dispute as to precedence of the Admiral of the floet The nomination of candidates for extraordinary elections of two councillors for Kawakawa Riding of tho Bay of Islands Council, closed on Tuesday. The following candidates were nominated: — J. A. L. Hall, W. H. Ward, W. Swift, and A. Christuy. Tho election takes place on the 17th.j; The Metropolitan Club refuses to permit pony races now, and the Whangarei Racing Club meet on Saturday to consider the matter. This arbitrary and unnecessary interierence with country clubs must cause them at nb distant date to kick over the. traces, as pony races are very popular liere, and Whangarei has always been noted for producing ponies of great speed. The programme of sports nnd racing to be held on the Kensington Course on Boxing Day appears elsewhere. H was originally advertised as a hack and pony race meeting, but has been altered to tsports nnd racing so that horses competing would not bo disqualified afterwards from running at race meetings. It seems to be a differenco without a distinction, but such is tho law of racing.
