WHANGAREI PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.

i a Thk iibovo Society gave their fisjul concert fur tin; present your iv tho Public Hull on Tuesday evoning lust, and tbe (jvojung being iiuo tlioro wus a largo assemblage of people to witness the performance. Tho programme was opi-uod by tho Society's String Band jil.-i-yiug t!u> overture, *• I'r.i i)iuvi>!,;j ' in ji voi v able uuuixior, after which tlio fcioeioiy rondoivd tho difficult and beautiful cantata, eu titled " The Lay of thu Boil "' by Ilomborg. The leading part, entitled "Tbe Master," was entrusted to Mr Guilding. who acquitted himself in splendid form. Mr Guilding was in fine voice, aud lio never used his rich, (loop voice to bettor effect. His rendering of tbe part was a musical treat. The other soloists were Mesdaines Connell, Sissons, Miss Gledhill, and Messrs Iteyburn, Connell, and Bradley, all of whom appeared to their best advantage. Their parts were more than ordinarily difficult. The duct by Mrs Council and Miss Gledhill and tbe duet by Messrs Connell and ll<-yburn wero also rendered with considerable ability. The quartette by Meslames Boult and Sissons and Messrs Barton mid Bradley met with considerable applnnso. The Band then rendered ' the waltz " Antionette" and an interval followed The second part opened with the overture " Zaiiipa v by tho Band. Tlie Society then rendered '* On Shore and Sea'" (by Sir Arthur Sullivan). This throughout was exceedingly well rendered, all the choruses especially goiug off splendidly. Wo think that the programme was a very good one and congratulate tho Society on their steady improvement. Mr Dobbie conducted the vocal part aud Mr Counell the instrumental part in their usual masterly style. Mrs DobHe presided at the piano iv the vocal part ipA&wfisual abln manner. The Society has now ceased rehearsals for the Christmas vacation, a period of six weeks. We trust to see v good number join at the now year and so carry o-i the objects of the Society to a successful uik! masterly issue. The last concert of the season was a musical treat, and we trust to be able during the new year to chronicle other musical triumphs.
