MARERETU.
fFrom our own Correspondent.) Some months past "we received the welcome inteligence from our representative, Mr Thompson, that £500 had been voted for the further construction nothwards of the Mareretu-Waikiekie road, since then, however, we have heard nothing more respecting thus important work. We fervently hope that the energetic member for Marsden will again look into the matter and bring it under the notice of the proper authorities, for it is a road of great utility to the settlers here. I observe that the Paparoa school committee have decided to introduce Dr. Bichardson's Temperance Lesson Book into their day school. I question whethei this movement will meet with the approval of a large number of parents in the district. As to my knowledge a great many people are adverse to having such one-sided views taught to theii children. In my opinion children should not be held with too tight a rein, thej should be allowed a little liberty oi thought. We invariably find the greatesi drunkards are amongst those, (who in their young days) were not permitted tc see a bottle in their parents house, oi taught to discriminate between use auc abuse. Very little interest was evinced in tht local option poll for the Mareretu district last week, only two vote 3 being recorded one for and one against an increase o1 licenses. The Paparoa correspondent oi the "Weekly News" is jubilant at tht lesult of the local option poll for thai district. If there had been any occasior for the moderate party to come forward the so called temperance people woulc probably hare found to their sorrow thai they are not to be sneered at. lam glac to observe that you have appointed i
correspondent in the Paparoa neighbourhood. I trust he will interest himself and make the Advocate better known in the Paparoa district. In years gone by it enjoyed a large circulation in that district. It is an excellent seltiers paper and its nominal cost, (ten shillings per annum) places it within the reach of the most humble.
