RUATANGATA.

Prior to the departure of our old and respected friends Mr and Mrs Marcroft for Australia, a social evening was spent at. the School-house, Euatangata West, on Friday, 22nd, by their friends anci neighbours in order to say farewell. The programme for the evening was long and varied, consisting of songs; duets, and recitations, interspersed with dancing. Mrs Cutforth presided at the harmonium, playing the accompaniments with her usual good taste; Mr McNaughton kindly giving the dance music with his violin. Between nine and ten o'clock refreshments were passed round, when Mr Street took the opportunity of presenting Mr and Mrs Marcroffc on behalf of their friends and neighbours a handsome French timepiece mounted on black marble inlaid, in the panel of which was a silver plate bearing the following inscription : — " Presented to Mr and Mrs Marcroft by a few friends on their leaving Bu»---tangata. N.Z., June 22nd, 1888." Mr Streetremarkingthatthepresent was made in token of the esteem in which they were held, and begged of their acceptance of the souvenir in the spirit in which it was given ; he also expressed | his regret at losing so good a neighbour and valuable a settler. Mr Marcroft , feelingly and briefly replied thanking , them for this evidence of esteem, ana i also for the many kindnesses which had t been shown him during his residence at ; Buatangata.
