lIISUEANGI CASE.

The. civil- case, Public Trustee ■v. Wilson's -Collieries, Ltd., in which £2000 damages were claimed on behalf of Isabella Veitch, Elspeth Veitch and William Veitch, the widow and children of David Veitch, was listed for trial at Auckland on November 23. When the case was called, however, Mr. P. J. O'Regan, on behalf of the plaintiff, intimated that the case had been settled, and it was struck out accordingly. The Worker is authorised to say that the defendant company paid £1500 damages and £50 costs. The action arose out of an accident which occurred in the defendant company's, mine at Hikurangi on August 4 last, when two -miners, David Veitch and John Craig, were killed. They were in the act of entering the mine preparatory to commencing worlc when they were overtaken by s«nr«HU runaway trucks, and so seriously-in-jured that both men died almost immediately. Craig was a single man, who left no dependants, and consequently the company was liable only for funeral expenses. ' Veitch's widow and family brought an action for dataAges independently of the Workers' Compensation Act, with . the result above stated.
