General Secretary's Southern Visit
Mr. P. O'Rourke, secretary, NewZealand Miners' Federation, has spent the last fortnight in visiting the Southern coal miners' unions. He attended meetings in Taratu, .Kaitangata, Green Island, and Shag Po'.nt. Conditions at all these places are bad, the market being glutted with coal, and unemployment being rife. Miners in many cases, especially at Kai'jailgata, Green Island, f Taratu, are only working two and throe days a week. At Tantfu ONLY TWO DAYSWORK A WEEK HAVE- BEEN WORKED FOR THE LAST EIGHT MONTHS. At Kaitangata six weeks ago 100 miners .WERE KNOCKED OFF, AND THESE ARE IDLE AT THE PRESENT TIME. The result of these evil economic conditions has been to considerably dishearten the members of the unions.
