Mr. Justice Edwards

♦ CRITICISM BY A SOUTHERN PAPER.

Commenting on certain remarks passed by Mr. Justice Edwards i_ connection with a case hoard recently at Hamilton—not the libel caso against "The Worker"—the Dunedin "Star" says:— "It will be an evil day for the Dominion when our people begin to look upon the Supreme Court Judges as mere men, elderly, peevish, and cantankerous. In tho hurly-burly of everyday life every man knows how difficult it is for him to form a sound opinion upon any subject when his temper is not under complete control. Can it then be wondered) at if the average mam. loses confidence in a Judge who seems unable to control himself and who seems so prone to use tho power of his high position to snub and criticise all and sundry who havo the misfortune to cross his path? If tbe stato of Mr. Justice Edwards' health is such as to cause anxiety to his friends, we submit respectfully that tho proper course to pursue is to make representations in the right quarter that will have the effect of ensuring for him leave of absence long enough te v entitle him to draw his full pension."
