Militant Millerton

.'./.';- . .' By DEEMING.

■ - Since . -my last - report' things have, moved here rapidly, .both industrially aud politically. , At the last meeting of our .union (which is, by the way, still held by. officers who have not the confidence of the members) members!- selected three of their most intellectual comrades to represent them on the committee. ■ This being the half-yearly meeting, the officers were compelled, according to their rule's, ...to appoint three, committeemen. They also appointed J. Watson to represent the union at the July Conference in Wellington. J. Watson is secretary of the local branch of the S.D.P., and can be relied upon as a solid advocate for the miners of this hill. During the past month we -have had P. C. Webb, M-P- for Grey,.-to address a public meeting. He received a good hearing. . Also J. Thofne/. of ChristchVch, who was also well received. Wo look .forward with pleasure to a future visit from these two exponent.-- of wcrkiag-class org-inisation. Tbe education of our children on this hill bos been hampered by the staff of teachers having inadequate acconynodation for the children. The Nelson Education Board have given the local School Committee very, little assistance since, their school was destroyed by fire, over 12. months ago, A new school is promised in the rear future, but the special -Jrrant from the Government seems to be the trouble. It is a disgrace to any Government to albw 200 children, for a period of 12 . Months, to be taught tunder such uiifavourable conditions as at' Millfrton, We havo had members of Parliament herej and'have shown- them the condititons. under which the chfldre'u are taught; still ho'movement is made. We hope that when Parliament sits next week thw grant will be at once made, and so allow'the new school to be completed. .
