NEARLY DROWNED

UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT AT PICNIC. MAN’S TIMELY RESCUE A neaf-tragedy somewhat marred tbe pleasure of those attending the Milton Methodist Church picnic at Waihola on Saturday, when a local man was nearly drowned in the lake. We understand that the gentleman, Mr A. H. Sharpe, went out for a row in a canvas canoe owned by his son, Stanley, and he either missed a stroke with the paddle or was caught by a wave. The result was that the canoe upset and catapulted the occupant into the lake in water too deep for the man to stand up in. His plight was noticed by some boys and a girl in a rowing boat, who happened to be near at hand. The girl, Evelyn Cuff, dived in and supported him until the boat was close enough for Mr Sharpe to take a grip; two of the boys, D. Morris and 0. Holmes, then held him up while the boat was rowed to the jetty. Prom what can be gathered it was a close enough shave to satisfy the most exacting adventurer.

Mr Sharpe, although a good swimmer, was hampered by the weight of his clothing, and he swallowed a large amount of water before being rescued.

Not for many years has the Mataura River been in such a low state as at the present time (says the Mataura Ensign). An accurate guide to the rise and fall in the water level over a long period has been compiled by the management of the Mataura paper mill, and the existing level sets a record. The bed of the river between the weir and the concrete retaining walls of the races leading to the turbines of the mill and freezing works is practically dry, a rare occurrence, while so little water is passing over the falls that the rock face may be crossed from [gida to side without trouble.
