Successful Concert for Hospital Christmas Fund

With the commendable object of raising money to aid the Palmerston North Hospital Christmas Comforts’ Fund, members of the drama circle of the Townswomen’s Guild, headed by Mrs. E. L. Christian, organised a concert which took place at the Opera House on Wednesday evening before a large and appreciative audience. There was pleasing variety in the programme to please all tastes, with some of the city’s most talented and popular artists to provide really satisfying entertainment. At the conclusion of the programme, the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) apologised for the absence of Mr. J. A. Nash (chairman of the Hospital Board), who sent his good wishes for the function. On behalf of the Board, Mr. Mansford thanked the drama circle for organising the concert, the artists, Mr. Nichols and Opera House staff, Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Humphrey for a donation, Mr. S. Toon, stage manager, Messrs Sadd, Bee, Humphrey and Mayo for assistance, the ushers and programme sellers, Mrs. Rossor and business firms for practical help. It is expected a very creditable sum will be available as a result of the concert.

The programme was as follows: Bohemian Orchestra, “Bohemian Girl”; Intermediate School Boys’ Choir (conductor, Mr. A. F. Budd); song and dance, Colin Tucker; tap ballet, isa McKenzie School of Dancing; vocal solos, Mr. G. Mi. Whitclock, “La Donna e Mobile” and “The English Rose” (from “Merrie England”); pianoforte duet, Misses W. Burgess and Dorothy McKegg; “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2”; Irish ballet and song, Zoe Bailey School of Dancing, vocal soloist, Mrs. Mclntyre; vocal solo, “O Promise Me,” Mrs. G. E. Nilssen; one-act play, members of Townswomen’s Guild Drama Circle, “Husbands Supplied” (Mrs. R. Holmes, producer); Bohemian Orchestra, “Flowers and Smiles”; A.S.O.D. Ballet Group, “The Lost Shepherd ” and “Trio Reene”; elocution, Janet Holmes; vocal solos, Mr. C. F. Bowick, “The Lute Player,” “The Castilean Lament”; violin solo, “Caratina,” Kevin Ancel; character ballet, Audrey Wilton School of Dancing; solo dance, “Ouled Nial,” Miss Cecily Jones; nursing review, Nurse Hoben and Nurses of the Hospital. The accompanists were Mesdames C. F. Bowick and C. R. Gair. Mr. S. Toon was stage manager. The orchestra consisted of Mrs. J. King, Misses Kendall, Dittmer, Messrs Whitcombe, Inkpen, Low, F. Piper, B. Newth and I. Savil. The conductor was Mr. F. McLeod and Miss E. Tonkin was at the piano.
