Whalebone Find.

A lower jawbone of a whale, measuring 15ft. in length, was found at •South Brighton (Christchurch) by two New Brighton boys, Keith Cunningham and Jim Ingold. Roaming in the sandhills at South Brighton near the spit the boys had their attention drawn to a coral-like object protruding from .the sand. When they unearthed the object it proved to bo a large v*hale bone. Commenting on the discovery, the curator of the Canterbury Museum (Dr. B. A. Falla), said that it was possible that there were many old whalebones along the New Brighton coast, as numerous whales had been washed up there. The bodies disintegrated and the sands soon covered the bones. The bone the boys found was possibly part of the remains of several whales washed up at New Brighton about 1907.
