Gaming Act Breach.
Walter Campbell White, aged 45, company manager, was fined £IOO for bookmaking l on Saturday in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The police stated that when his premises were visited he had taken £B4 5s in bets. He had no previous convictions for bookmaking. Mine Staging Destroyed. A fire, fanned by a strong wind, destroyed practically tho whole of the staging at the Birchwood mine at Ohai early on Monday morning. The efforts of volunteer workers averted more serious damage. The fire apparently originated in the scrub adjoining the tram road. The men worked continuously to-day to prevent any spread of the fire. In the meantime, the output of the mine will be lost, as there can be no handling of coal till the staging has been rebuilt. National Savings Quota Successes. Although only eight months of the present financial year have elapsed, 78 places throughout the Dominion have exceeded their annual National Savings quota. Last week quota successes totalled 254, the highest number recorded sinco Jul, last. Wangauui is the latest district annual success, making five district annual successes to date. In addition, 305 new National Savings accounts were opened for the weeK ended November 15, being the highest during the last three months and making 5312 since July 1. During the two weeks ended November 15, over £254,000 was received in investments, being the largest amount since the 1945 Victory Loan campaign. The sum of approximately £1,500,000 is now required by March 31 to reach tho National Savings budget of £8,000,000 for this year. This shortdated 3 per cent, investment is becoming increasingly popular, as repayment of deposits made up to June 30, 1946, are repayable on June 30, 1948.
