Christmas Meeting of Townswomen’s Guild

There was a large attendance welcomed at the November meeting of the Palmerston North Townswomen’s Guild by Mrs. W. S. Woodroofe, who expressed special pleasure in the presence of Mesdames E. G. Spraggon (vicepresident), Robson, Nesbitt, Inglis and Low, also Miss Rawstron who had been absent through illness, at the Christmas meeting. Vivid red roses, sweet william and a wealth of summer blooms I graced the stage. Correspondence included communications from tho Dominion secretary, giving notification ot the conference to be held in Wellington ; in April, 1946, remits for which must be in by February 12. A summary of the minutes of the last Dominion executive committee meeting intimated that Mrs. Pow (Dominion president) had read a letter of appreciation from the secretary of the Dr. Barnado Homes in England for the money forwarded through the efforts of Townswomen's Guild members in displaying the floral carpets throughout the Dominion. In all, over £IOOO had been received. Thanks haa also* been conveyed to members of an branches for assistance in the Unrra clothes drive for packing and all the work done directly anu through the Lady Galway Guild. Mrs. Gilmer had stated that 1126 cases had been forwarded representing £1,294,72U, and there was more to go. Mrs. A. E. Mansford (Palmerston North) had re--1 ported the pleasing help of members in I Palmerston North. The suggestion was made that branches should provide exI penses for their delegates to tho con--1 ference. The general secretary, Pal- ! merston North Y.W.C.A., solicited help |on their annual street day. Mr. W. Cowling and family, also Mrs. A. S. Edwards, made grateful acknowledgment of sympathy received in their re- ; cent bereavement, and Mrs. V. Low for sympathy in her indisposition. Mrs. E. L. Christian, as convener of the Drama Circle, made a plea for hearty support of the concert organised by the circle to be held on Wednesday in the Opera House for hospital comforts, and gave notification of a visit to the Awapuni Home on December 6. Reports of circles were also given by Mrs. O. Gray (arts and crafts), Mrs. Ellis ''gardening) who conveyed the season’s greetings and notified their next meetings for March, 1946. Pleasure was given to the company by Mrs. Mclntyre with vocal solos; by Mesdames W. Bigha-m and Sadd, with vocal duets, Mrs. Bigham being the accompaniste; also by Mrs. A. H. Spencer, with elocutionary items. Competitions of a varied nature occupied part of the time, Mesdames A. C. Bradfield, Stopford, Hoare, R. Carruthers, G. Lyne, Wiggins, K. Holmes, Bee and Gray also Betty Low boing prize winners. Prizes were donated by Mesdames Fariand, Askew, Voss, Hunt and S. Toon. Tokens of appreciation for good services were presented to the secretary (Mrs. E. A. Cooper) and treasurer (Mrs. K. Manning), by' Mrs. Woodroofe, who in turn was honoured by Mrs. Cooper, who presented a Christmas gift on behalf of the committee. Returning thanks Mrs. Woodroote voiced appreciation of the help of tne officers and committee without whicii she could have accomplished little, ana her pleasure in the office. Gifts were also made to Mesdames Mcßrearty and Burke for their kindly help in the tea room, these ladies being musically honoured. A feature of the afternoon was the sales stall which did brisk business, stallholders being as follow: Arts and crafts, Mesdames Gray (convener), W. Voss; white elephant, Mrs. L. Sadd; produce and flowers, Mesdames R. Carruthers and L. E. Matthews. The sum of £6 9s 6d was raised by means of the sale. Mesdames Revere and Kensington were welcomed as new members. Mrs. Bee returned thanks to the performers. Before the meeting terminated, the president conveyed the season a I greetings to the members which were I heartily reciprocated.

A.N.A. Club Activities. Members of the Milson Institute serviced the A.N.A. Club at the weeKend, when 33 teas were served. Tne hostesses were Mrs. G. Dearlove and Miss C. Warburton. Tho tables were decorated with vases of poppies and the; lounge with bowls of blossoms, Mesdames N. D. Stubbs and T. P. Hart being responsible for the decorations. The Palmerston North Music Cluo entertained as usual.
